Mandatory fire barriers for every plastic drainage system

For a ducting system within a building to comply with fire prevention legislation, certified fire barrier products (collars, barrier devices, sleeves, wrap strips) designed to embrace the pipe must be applied to all piping in the following plastic materials: polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE-HD), polyvinylchloride (PVC) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). These products create a barrier between the inhabited spaces in a building and the space where a fire has started (garage, cellar, laundry, boiler room etc.) which prevents flame and harmful substances from travelling to the inhabited spaces through the plastic pipes for a period of time specified by law (from 60 to 180 minutes). A fire barrier collar is made from an intumescent material (encased in a galvanised steel ring) which, in the case of fire, expands and compresses the pipe to prevent the passage of flame, fumes and combustion gases. Fire barriers between different spaces in the building may be necessary for both floors and walls, and are required for the plastic pipes of all ducting systems: including all types of water drain (for black, white and grey water), and fume, air and dust extraction systems.

Class EI 180 fire collar compliant with EN 1366-3

The fire resistance class of a fire collar is determined by testing conducted in accordance with the international standard EN 1366-3. The resistance class – in other terms, the time for which the collar continues to offer protection in the event of a fire – is determined in different test configurations, with the two rooms connected by both open and closed piping, and for both floors and walls. Bampi fire collars have a fire resistance rating EI 180 in O/C (open/closed) configuration. The fire collar is extremely simple and quick to install. Two hinged half-shells on the exterior of the galvanised steel collar clamp the collar itself around the pipe. The collar must be anchored to the surface of the floor or wall with steel bolts fitted through the specific slots. The range of Bampi fire collars is available in diameters of 32, 40, 50, 63, 75, 90, 100, 110, 125, 140, 160, 200, 250 and 315 millimetres.

Class EI 180 intumescent wrap strip compliant with EN 1366-3

The function of the wrap strip is to fill the empty space between the wall and all flammable pipes in plastic. This product consists of a multilayer strip with outer layers in glass fibre containing an inner layer in intumescent material. The principle behind the fire barrier effect is the same as with fire collars: when exposed to flame, the intumescent material expands and completely seals the passage hole of the pipe. The wrap strip is recommended for all cases where fire collars cannot be used (usually due to limited space).
